Fall Classes

All dancers may take recreational classes. Dancers who wish to compete as part of D.E.P.T. (Dance Etc. Performance Troupe) must audition in June each year. Those who make the teams must then sign up for both technique classes and D.E.P.T. classes.

Classes

Our classes fall into two categories: those for recreation and those for competition.

Recreational Dance at Dance Etc...

Ballet

Since ballet is the foundation of all other disciplines of dance, all of our dancers begin with ballet. As progress is made, students may choose to move on to pre-pointe and then pointe.

Hip Hop

With its beginnings in street dance, hip hop has evolved into a variety of styles made up of popping, breaking, and locking, and is often influenced by gymnastics and martial arts.

Tap

By making sounds with the metal taps on the heels and toes of their shoes, tap dancers mix dance and percussion to create their steps.

Acro

Acro combines the elements of both acrobatics and classical dance into a genre that is exciting to learn and perform. Seen in dance theater such as Cirque du Soleil, acro provides the challenge of athletic ability mixed with artistic musicality.

Jazz

Enjoyed since mid-century, modern jazz combines the dance traditions of African-American and Caribbean cultures. Choreographers such as Bob Fosse and George Balanchine helped to make this genre even more popular.

Contemporary/Modern

Although it's difficult to specifically define this genre, author Emil Rath said that it is a "form of dancing which strives to portray in movements what the music master expresses in his compositions - interpretive dancing."

Competitive Dance at Dance Etc...

D.E.P.T. (Dance Etc. Performance Troupe) is the competitive dance team at Dance Etc. The team is divided into several age/skill groups, but they all compete in dance competitions around New England. Students who wish to audition for D.E.P.T. do so in May each year, and if chosen, are placed in the appropriate level. D.E.P.T. members make a year-long commitment which includes taking multiple technique classes, along with a specific class just for their D.E.P.T. team.

*Note that D.E.P.T. members are required to take ballet, tap, jazz, and technique classes. They also have their own D.E.P.T. hip hop, pointe, and modern classes available. The schedule below does not reflect any D.E.P.T. classes.
